The History of Lavender

Discover Lavender's history and how it became the perfect essential oil for relieving stress and anxiety, as well as its healing benefits on the skin.

Origin of Lavender

The deliciously perfumed plant was brought to France around 600 BC by traders. However, it was the Romans who first learnt to extract the plant’s essential oil and named the plant Lavender, from the Latin lavare, ‘to wash’. The romans loved a good bath and were highly motivated to improve the experience.

Perfectly adapted to the Provençal climate, the four types of wild lavender – Lavandula vera, Lavandula spica, Lavandula stoechas, and Lavandula dentata (French lavender) – flourished under the dazzling sun that later seduced artists including Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh and Henri Matisse.

In 1910 French chemist and scholar René-Maurice Gattefossé discovered the virtues of the essential oil of Lavender. Gattefossé badly burned his hand during an experiment in a perfumery plant and treated the burn with pure Lavender essential oil. He was later amazed at how quickly his burn healed, the infection was ‘extinguished’ and he experienced very little scarring.

This started a fascination with essential oils and he subsequently collaborated with a number of doctors who treated French soldiers for war wounds in military hospitals using Lavender and other essential oils. The accounts of these cases constitute a large part of his text. For aromatherapists since, Lavender is probably the most frequently used essential oil and is used for a wide variety of applications from relaxation to skin care.

Australian Grown

Lavender was first introduced in Australia at the Bridestowe Estate in Tasmania in 1921 using pure French lavender (Lavandula augustifolia). Since then, Bridestowe’s Lavender oil has become the finest in the world used in high quality perfumes and skincare.

Bridestowe’s Lavender oil is produced using ancient distillation methods, rather than processing it. Therefore, we’ve selected their Lavender for our Pure Body Luxe RELAX Face & Body Oil.

Bridestowe produces clean, pure lavender oil, specifically low in camphor, letting the sweet and musky tones indulge the senses.

Key benefits of Lavender

There are many scientific studies that show that Lavender oil is one of the most effective homeopathic treatment for anxiety and depression with documented efficacy. Lavender oil has been found to be comparable with some prescription medications for relieving symptoms of GAD (General Anxiety Disorder).

For mood elevation, alleviation of insomnia or helping with a headache, lavender can be infused into a room, sprayed on bedsheets and handkerchiefs, or incorporated into a soothing massage. For ‘green cleaning’ we recommend a disinfectant made from orange and lavender oils to spray on surfaces.
